Yard Wars, Round Two

I bet you're wondering where 'Yard Wars, Round One' is. There isn't a post for that. In Round One I sprayed weed killer all around the house and then some total vegetation killer in an effort to make my life easier. The spray combined with a few hard freezes helped me win Round One.

This was the view was you approached my front porch late last year. See the tall, green stuff with the huge leaves? Keep these three pots to the right of the steps in mind, they will come up again later. Only one has a living plant in it. The other stuff is weeds or dead plants I need to remove.

See it now? It had gotten totally out of control as the previous tenants apparently didn't do anything around the house. You couldn't get to the outside spigot nor the hose hanger on the back side of the front porch. Plus there was all kinds of trash down in there that couldn't be reached due to all the big green plants. I meant to take a photo from the porch looking down towards all the trash but I was so eager to get the work done I forgot to take a picture. I need to trim the dead growth from the small palms.

In this photo the brown spot is where a large and very thorny cactus used to live. It was so huge that it covered almost half of the front walk. See the photo below.

See the ugly large, leash snagging, dog hair grabbing cactus? See also the huge, green stuff? I hate out of control landscaping.

Anyway, as I was working on this project I got some welcome and very unexpected help from the two boys next door and the two girls across the street. The two boys dug out the root ball for the cactus then they helped me excavate most of the stepping stones that lead from the front walk to the back of the front porch.

If you look closely at this photo you can see the black landscape edging material. See how close it is to the stepping stones?

Now that I have cleared all the brush out you can see how far out the plants had taken over. It is a mess now but next weekend I intend to dig up the root balls of the evil big green plants and rake the area,

When I cleared out and cleaned out behind the porch I came across this poor small palm. Maybe I can save it and replant it in one of the three pots just to the right of the front steps.

There is also this,,,plant. I have no idea what it was or if it will come back. I think the hard freezes took it down for at least the winter. I need to clean out all the dead growth and weeds so maybe it will come back in the Spring.

At this point I am sure y'all are wondering why I am doing this to not only a rental, but to a place that I hope to leave in 8 months. The answer is, because I hate looking at an unkept, messy yard. I live here now and I take pride in my home. Where the cactus was taken out, that Sago palm is also coming out as it is sick and dying, and two new Sago palm pups will be planted. And the tall, spikey plant near the front steps,,,that baby is getting cut down by at least half. It is so tall that it is propped up with a 2x4.

The three pots to the right of the front door will be replanted and given love so when I come home in the warmer months I'll actually be proud to say "This is my home.".
