Yard Wars Round 3

Going back over the photos this could be rounds 3 AND 4, but we'll just stick to Round 3.

I'll start by refreshing your memory of what the front walk and around the porch looked like when I moved in last year. The really tall green plant near the front porch is called a Spanish Bayonet. My friend Steve said I would look like a pin cushion after I cut it down. The large grey-green cactus is an Agave cactus.

Then I had this intrusive plant taking over the side and the back of the front porch.

Now to clarify "Yard Wars" that means anything out side of my heated and cooled square footage,,,for example my back deck. It is no fun sitting outside when this is one of two light sources.

This was the other. The porch light doesn't work and the bolt holding the bottom of the fixture on is so rusted that even after lots of PB Blaster I cannot get the bolt to budge.

This is 2/14/2016. The Agave is gone and two new Sago Palm pups have been planted. I still need to remove the existing Sago as it is dying.

The Spanish Bayonet tree lost its fight with me. I ended up with a total of 5 pricks that went through my garden gloves. One left a small thorn tip in my hand which I did not notice until it started to fester. I came out better than I thought I would and the walkway looks a whole lot better now.

Next I trimmed the frost bitten ends of these palms and finished digging out the stepping stones.

After working on the yard I wrapped little white lights around the baker's rack on the back deck. It is much nicer to sit outside now.

It is now late February (exactly 2 weeks later) and the days are getting longer and warmer. I am looking forward to being able to plant flowers in this planter.

So today I cut down all of the dead growth on this plant and pulled out a lot of grass that had grown up between the stalks. It suffered massive frost and freeze damage. I should put some edging around it.

Now by this time on Sunday afternoon my back is not at all happy with me. On Saturday I cleaned the house, did 3 loads of wash, spent 4 hours putting out new stock at Michaels then came home and did some ironing. By Sunday afternoon I have now spent another 4 hours putting out new stock at the store. As I start to dig up the roots from the intrusive plants my back goes from not being happy to yelling at me. Sometimes it gets really loud.

But, I persevered and got all the big roots dug out. The miserable plants that were here send out underground runners and there was no way to get all of them without crawling around on my knees. But I got 90% of the roots dug up, bagged and out to the curb.

The front stepping stones look so much better now that they have settled and the rain has washed them clean.

After all that work I promised my back 3 Ibuprofen and a rest on the deck with a mango margarita and a cigar. I hope my back doesn't catch on that I have to do two 2 loads of wash before bedtime. It might start yelling at me again .
