Key to a Great Birthday Weekend

I recently had a birthday. No big deal, every living person celebrates a birthday. But this was the best birthday I have had in years, and I do mean years.

My friend Terri and I made plans for a Girls' Weekend at her condo in Welaka. Her and I and our 3 female dogs. Since we are coming from two different parts of town, Terri came by the office and gave me a key to her condo. Actually this is the second time. I didn't know I was supposed to keep the key the first time. Hence the "Key to a Great Birthday Weekend".

Once parked and unloaded I put up the sun screen for Nohia's dash. I would not be driving her for 48-hours.

In the morning before I hit the road I had made a batch of fudge with macadamia nuts in it for us to snack on over the weekend. It was really good.

I love the view out her sliding glass doors. The huge Live Oak trees dripping with Spanish Moss, the river in the background, the inviting pool. Ahhh,,,,

Kele loved laying and looking out the sliding glass doors at all the squirrels. Terri and I commented on how little she barked at people walking around.

Lili loved being there also.

After consuming copious amounts of wine on Friday night we made us a good breakfast of bacon, homestyle potatoes and scrambled eggs with cheese. We needed this.

After breakfast it was time for a round of Scattagories. I love playing this with Terri because she often goes off on the wrong letter. The first list, on the left, the letter was 'S'. For the second list. the letter was 'B' and she started out with Barbara Streisand. Somehow she got carried away with the whole letter 'S' again. We agreed to have a do-over. The fun thing with Scattagories is you can get creative with your answers and challenges become fun.

We eventually decided to drive down the road to a little winery. The county road to get to her condo is very quiet and out in the country.

At the winery, there is this little building next to the gift shop. Its cute and quaint. I have no idea what it is used for.

The Muscadine vines were growing well. Since neither of us like Muscadine wine we did not do a tasting.

We did get to taste a Key Lime wine slushy. We loved it and we each bought a bottle of Key Lime wine and the Key Lime slushy mix. The wine and the mix came from a Florida winery over near St. Petersburg. The wine is made from 100% Key Lime juice, no other fruit juice is added. Next time I head over to see Nan I want to visit this winery.

Back at the condo we whipped up a batch of Key Lime wine slushies and took them to the pool. It was hot! I mean close to 100 with oppressive humidity and t-storms were starting to build. We finished out drinks by the pool and retreated indoors before we got struck by lightening. Back in the cool air-conditioned comfort of the condo we had a round of vodka-tonics and finished our game of Scattagories.

Since I had brought the food and cooked on my birthday Terri insisted on taking me out to celebrate on Saturday. We headed off to Renegade's On the River. We had a round of cocktails and admired the view. Terri says the sunsets there are beautiful. We didn't stay that long, maybe next time, with a designated driver other than her or I.

We split an order of smoked fish spread as an appetizer. This was really good. However they give you this huge scoop of spread and only a few crackers. We had to get more crackers.

For our main course we both ordered the Filet Mignon, medium rare. You do not get to choose your sides. You get what they give you, period. The veggies had way too much Cayenne in them and were a bit too spicey for my taste. Otherwise the food was really good.

Later that night, maybe it was actually early Sunday morning (based on the date stamp on the photo) we decided we needed to go to bed. I was greeted by this view as I walked into the guest bedroom. Really? Where am I supposed to fit in this bed?

Eventually I was able to work myself into a small area of the bed. This was my view right before I turned out the lights. Got to love my girls.
